What does an abortion cost in Switzerland?
The cost of an abortion in Switzerland ranges from 500 to 2,000 francs. This range can be explained by the fact that different abortion methods have different prices and the price of an abortion can be determined by the doctor performing the procedure at their own discretion.
The following three factors influence the exact cost of an abortion:
- 🩺 Not all abortion methods cost the same:
The suction method is by far the most common method. As it requires anesthesia, it differs in price from a medical abortion. You can find out more below. - 🕰 The week of pregnancy influences the choice of method:
Within the legal period for a penalty-free abortion, both abortion methods are initially possible. From a certain week of pregnancy, medication abortion is no longer possible for medical reasons. You can find out more about this below. - 👨⚕️ The doctor performing the abortion decides:
The costs vary depending on the examinations that the doctor performing the procedure deems necessary and the anesthesia that may be used.
What do the various abortion methods cost?
- The cost of a medication abortion (outpatient, usually with Mifegyne® ) in Switzerland is between 500 and 1,000 francs.
- A surgical abortion (by aspiration or curettage), on the other hand, costs around 1,000 to 2,000 francs.
The cost of a medical abortion is therefore somewhat lower than that of a surgical abortion. However, for medical reasons, the medical method is not possible for the entire duration of the abortion.
⏳ Here you will find answers to the question of how long you can have an abortion and until when which method is possible. Including self-test!
It is advisable not to make this decision based on price. Rather, when making such a difficult decision, it is worth taking your time to look at where you may still have concerns. You should focus on your physical and mental well-being. You can take the time and support you need to make a mature decision in the end and, above all, listen to what your heart is telling you.
Costs of an abortion under the age of 18
The cost of an abortion for girls or underage women under the age of 18 is exactly the same as for women of legal age. An abortion at 15 or 16 basically costs the same as an abortion at 18 or over.
What is different compared to an abortion over 18, however, are the legal regulations under which circumstances an abortion is permitted at all.

Who bears the costs of an abortion in Switzerland?
In most cases, a woman in Switzerland does not have to pay the costs of an abortion herself. This is because all residents of Switzerland are required to take out health insurance. And each of these health insurance policies must cover the costs of an abortion.
However, as with all other medical treatments, two restrictions apply:
The health insurance company will only cover the costs if the medical treatment costs in a given year exceed the deductible (a contractually fixed basic sum). Some women therefore pay for the abortion themselves.
Even if the costs are covered by the health insurance company, the woman must pay a deductible of 10 percent.
This means that the assumption of costs by the health insurance company depends on the corresponding contract with the health insurance company. It is therefore advisable to check the data with the relevant health insurance company.
